Clearwater Middle School Counseling Program

Middle school is an exciting time of learning and growing, as students are exploring many new emotions as they navigate this exciting time in their lives. The school counselor is here to support all students at Clearwater Middle School by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that supports the academic, career, and social/emotional development of all students.

Students may see the school counselor in a variety of different settings:

  • Individual counseling -- This may be a one-time session when a student is having a particularly difficult day or dealing with an upsetting event. The school counselor may assist in developing coping strategies or act as a soundboard when students may need a listening ear. Individual counseling sessions may also happen on a more regular basis to address specific academic, emotional, or behavioral concerns. If students need in-depth counseling or long term therapy, they may be referred to an outside agency or other mental health specialist for more intensive support.

  • Classroom guidance -- Throughout the year, the school counselor prepares and teaches classroom guidance lessons that are specifically targeted for each grade level, in the areas of career development, personal/social development, and academic development.

  • Group counseling --The school counselor runs small groups (4-8 students) on a variety of topics. Depending on the need of the school and student population, these may include making friends, improving academic skills (such as time management and organization), anger management, social skills, etc. Groups typically run for 6-8 weeks for approximately 25-30 minutes each a week.

Other components of the school counseling program include supporting teaching and learning, implementing and participating in systems of support, and fostering a positive school culture and climate in which all students can be successful.
